When you don't have money, it's like air—few substitutes, and urgently needed.

But once you're doing OK money-wise, you realize there's so much money can't buy:

• Friends
• Health
• A happy marriage
• Free time
• Social status
• Reputation
• Respect
• Freedom of expression
• Political stability (governments, pensions, justice)
• Happy relationships with family members

These days, when evaluating an economic opportunity, my question isn't How much will I earn; the question is, What am I giving up?
